Does Derek Carr's skill-set match up with the schematic tendencies of New York Jets offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett?

We know Aaron Rodgers would fit seamlessly into Nathaniel Hackett’s New York Jets offense. Rodgers has already won two MVP awards with Hackett as his offensive coordinator.

The more interesting question is whether Derek Carr would fit into Hackett’s offense.

Let’s break down some of Hackett’s play-calling tendencies over the past four seasons (with both Green Bay and Denver) and see whether Carr’s strengths and weaknesses match up with the things Hackett likes to do.

Using data from NFL Next Gen Stats, here is a look at how often Hackett’s starting quarterbacks targeted each route type (quantified by the percentage of their pass attempts that targeted a receiver running the particular route type). These numbers are compiled from the combination of Aaron Rodgers’ 2019-21 seasons and Russell Wilson’s 2022 season:

It’s always been my thought the OC should be adjusting to the players on the field, not the other way. If so we could have stayed with Lefleur. Carr is the most talented guy not to soon hit 40 and will not cost picks which will be needed to fill holes. . Getting what looked and sounds like a player who can take of leave football at this point giving up any assets is silly when you combine it with his salary At his age I think Rodgers is interested in the $100m due but not so much in putting in the work needed to win big. With that said, if not Carr, I would skip Aaron and go to Jimmy G.

Curious, do you think Hackett called those routes because it suited Rodgers it was his preference? After a year with Russell, maybe Hackett will learn from square peg round hole.

I noticed that Rodgers’ 2022 rates didn’t change very much compared to 2019-21, so I think the Packers numbers were mostly a product of what Rodgers likes. In 2022 with Russ the changes were pretty significant in comparison to Rodgers’ rates from 2019-21. So, it seems like Hackett should do a good job of molding it to Carr if he ends up being the guy.

Well if true, that will be a nice change of pace with our OC adapting to his players and not vice versa

Hope so. Obviously, his adapting didn’t lead to any success last year, but by many accounts, the Broncos’ struggles on offense may have been more so on Russ for just being plain-old bad than on Hackett (not that Hackett is absolved of blame, by any means). Ideally that proves to be the case going forward
